SUMMARY:Esotouric Presents “The 1910 Los Angeles Times Bombing with Detective Mike Digby” webinar
DESCRIPTION:This is a recording of a webinar that previously streamed live. You can purchase a ticket to watch the recording\, but you won’t be able to participate in the live chat or Q&A. This recording will be available through midnight on Saturday\, November 15. \nPlease join us on Saturdays at noon Los Angeles time for a new live webinar. \n\n\n\nJoin Esotouric\, L.A.’s most eclectic sightseeing tour company\, for a webinar guest-hosted by bomb and arson detective and historian Mike Digby. \nMike will take us along on a scrupulously researched journey through early 20th Century Los Angeles\, bringing one of the nation’s most notorious criminal conspiracies to life. The Los Angeles Times Bombing case is a seminal teaching example which Mike has developed as curriculum for arson investigators\, has hosted as an Esotouric sightseeing tour (featured on Spectrum News 1)\, and now adapts into this webinar. While following the forensic leads of the unfolding case\, Mike will compare and contrast 21st century crime analysis methods with the tools available to investigators at the time. \nMike Digby is the author of these historic Los Angeles true crime books: The Bombs\, Bombers and Bombings of Los Angeles and A Bombing in the Wilshire-Pico District: The True Story of a 20th Century She-Devil and Her Plot to Murder\, Terrorize and Steal a Real Estate Empire in 1919 Los Angeles. \nABOUT THE CRIME: Late in the afternoon of September 30\, 1910\, a man left his downtown Los Angeles hotel and embarked on\, what for him\, was just another clandestine bombing mission. A veteran of more bombings than he cared to recall\, he had carefully scouted and selected his targets\, assembled the dynamite time bombs and prepared his alibis. To him\, this was supposed to be just another series of bombings. It would turn out to be anything but. \nCarrying a suitcase which held three time bombs\, or “infernal devices” as they were known\, he walked a short distance to the alley behind the Los Angeles Times. It was there in the shadows of that alley that he concealed one of the timed dynamite bombs. Within an hour\, he had placed identical timed dynamite bombs outside the homes of Los Angeles Times publisher General Harrison Gray Otis and Felix Zeehandelaar\, a close ally of General Otis’. \nThe bombings were part of a years-long and nationwide campaign of industrial sabotage and terror\, spearheaded by radical and conspiratorial elements within the national labor movement. It was their intention to bring union-resistant Los Angeles to its knees. \nConfident that his three bombs would explode long after he had left the city\, the man casually walked back to Los Angeles’ Santa Fe Station and boarded an evening train to San Francisco. Shortly after 1 AM on October 1\, 1910\, as the train continued traveling through the night\, a powerful explosion ripped through the Los Angeles Times building\, destroying much of the building and creating an inferno which resulted in twenty one deaths and scores of injuries. \nThanks to some determined investigative work\, effective exploitation of forensic evidence and a whole lot of luck\, a year-long manhunt across the United States resulted in the arrest\, trial and conviction of dozens of bombing co-conspirators – almost all of whom were senior executives within the labor movements. \nThis webinar will examine the National Dynamite Plot from its origins to its demise. We will follow the trail of the bombers\, from where the dynamite bombs were assembled to the locations where bombs were placed and exploded. Our discussion will include the reasons why each target was selected\, the courtroom shenanigans and other bombing sites which were intended to throw investigators off the trail. It was a conspiracy diabolical in scope and deadly in design. Like all plots\, it unraveled… in the most unlikely of ways. \nThis webinar is an illustrated lecture packed with original research\, rare photos and archival material that will let you experience an historic investigation in real time\, through the eyes of an experienced bomb detective and historian. And you’ll find the look of an Esotouric webinar is a little different than your standard dry Zoom session\, with lively interactive graphics courtesy of the mmhmm app. \nAfter the presentation\, Mike will answer your questions about this case\, his long career as a bomb and arson detective\, and his books\, so get ready to be a part of the show. \nCan’t join in when the webinar is happening? You’ll have access to the full replay for one week. \nSo\, tune in and discover the incredible history of Los Angeles\, with the couple whose passion for the city is infectious\, and their very special guest\, Mike Digby. \nFYI: Immediately upon registering\, you will receive a separate\, automated email containing the link to join the webinar. The webinar is reliable on all devices\, Mac\, PC\, iOS and Android. \nTo sign up\, enter your name and email address and click the “Buy Ticket” button. If for any reason the check out page doesn’t appear\, just click this link. \nPlease visit our FAQ for details about our webinars. \nAbout Mike Digby: After serving seven years in the United States Army\, Mike Digby joined the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department where he served proudly for more than 34 years. For the last seventeen years\, he was assigned as a Detective Bomb Technician in the Arson/Bomb Squad where his duties included rendering safe and disassembling improvised explosive devices\, examining and disposing of military ordnance and conducting post-blast investigations. A self-proclaimed “bomb nerd” and decorated detective\, Mike has spent years studying the motives of bombers\, their methods of attack and the bombs that they built. He has served as technical advisor on BBC and Discovery Channel programs. He has authored two books\, The Bombs Bombers and Bombings of Los Angeles and A Bombing in the Wilshire-Pico District: The True Story of a 20th Century She-Devil and Her Plot to Murder\, Terrorize and Steal a Real Estate Empire in 1919 Los Angeles. His third is due out in December 2020. \nAbout Esotouric: As undergraduates at UC Santa Cruz\, Kim Cooper and Richard Schave inexplicably hated one other on sight. (Perhaps less inexplicably\, their academic advisor believed they were soul mates). A chance meeting 18 years later proved much more agreeable. Richard wooed Kim with high level library database access\, with which she launched the 1947project true crime blog\, highlighting a crime a day from the year of The Black Dahlia and Bugsy Siegel slayings. The popular blog’s readers demanded a tour\, and then another. The tour was magical\, a hothouse inspiring new ways for the by-then-newlyweds to tell the story of Los Angeles. Esotouric was born in 2007 with a calendar packed with true crime\, literary\, architecture and rock and roll tours. Ever since\, it has provided a platform for promoting historic preservation issues (like the Save the 76 Ball campaign and the landmarking of Charles Bukowski’s bungalow)\, building a community of urban explorers (including dozens of free talks and tours under the umbrella of LAVA) and digging ever deeper into the secret heart of the city they love. \nRights and permissions: By attending an Esotouric webinar\, you acknowledge that the entirety of the presentation is copyrighted\, and no portion of the video or text may be reproduced in any fashion.

SUMMARY:Esotouric Presents “13 Uncanny Los Angeles Crimes & Mysteries” webinar
DESCRIPTION:This is a recording of a webinar that previously streamed live. You can purchase a ticket to watch the recording\, but you won’t be able to participate in the live chat or Q&A. This recording will be available through midnight on Saturday\, November 7. Please join us on Saturdays at noon Los Angeles time for a new live webinar. \n\n\n\n  \nJoin Esotouric\, L.A.‘s most eclectic sightseeing tour company\, for a special Hallowe’en program illuminating a ghastly selection of historic Los Angeles crimes and oddities. These 13 terrible tales were personally selected by true crime historian Kim Cooper to chill your blood for the spooky season. \nThe presentation includes a healthy blend of obscure and better known cases\, with a running Hallowe’en theme exploring the darker side of costumes and candy. You’ll marvel at the posthumous adventures of mummified old west bandit Elmer McCurdy\, shudder at the Svengali force of will that triggered the Trick or Treat Killing\, learn how one cute costumed San Fernando Valley tot’s death transformed the holiday forever\, and investigate Hollywood’s evolving Superman curse. These strange tales will fascinate and haunt you. \nYour hosts Kim Cooper and Richard Schave have been leading groups to offbeat Los Angeles landmarks since 2006\, when fans of Kim’s 1947project true crime blog demanded she write guided tours of the historic crime scenes they’d been reading about. \nSleuthing out crime scenes and cool vintage signs and buildings with dozens of fellow L.A. lovers proved so much fun that Kim and Richard made a business of it\, and Esotouric was born. From their flagship true crime tour The Real Black Dahlia (“a Los Angeles classic” – L.A. Times) to neighborhood jaunts Pasadena Confidential\, Weird West Adams and Eastside Babylon\, to tours celebrating Raymond Chandler\, Charles Bukowski and L.A. Noir\, these outings are a must for Angelenos and savvy travelers. \nAlthough Esotouric’s tours are not presently operating due to COVID-19 public health directives\, urban explorers can still spend a Saturday afternoon discovering the secret heart of Los Angeles\, through the newly launched Esotouric webinar series. These illustrated lectures stream live (starting at noon Los Angeles time)\, with viewers participating in the lively chat and Q&A session. And the recording of each webinar is available to watch for one full week. After that\, webinars become available as part of the Esotouric On-Demand series. \nThis webinar is an illustrated lecture packed with original research\, rare photos and archival material that will expose a secret history of mysterious Los Angeles crimes and mysteries\, and help scratch the itch of celebrating that rare Saturday\, full moon Hallowe’en without public events. And you’ll find the look of an Esotouric webinar is a little different than your standard dry Zoom session\, with lively interactive graphics courtesy of the mmhmm app. \nAfter the presentation\, Kim and Richard will answer your questions about these cases and their wider true crime research\, so get ready to be a part of the show. \nSo\, tune in and discover the incredible history of Los Angeles\, with the couple whose passion for the city is infectious. \nCan’t join in when the webinar is happening? SUMMARY:Esotouric Presents Shaking The Raymond Chandler Tree: New Discoveries About L.A.’s Master Detective Novelist
DESCRIPTION:This is a recording of a webinar that previously streamed live. You can purchase a ticket to watch the recording\, but you won’t be able to participate in the live chat or Q&A. This recording will be available until Saturday\, October 24. Join us on Saturdays at noon Los Angeles time for a new live webinar. \n\n\n\nJoin Esotouric\, L.A.’s most eclectic sightseeing tour company\, for a deep dive into the evolving field of Raymond Chandler studies. \nYour hosts Kim Cooper and Richard Schave gave their first tour of Raymond Chandler’s Los Angeles in 2007. As with all Esotouric tours\, the route and narrative has been subject to change\, with new locations added and original research reshaping how the story unfolds. \nWhile traveling in Chandler’s footsteps\, they’ve explored real-life crime scenes and time capsule landmarks where the author lived\, loved and worked—many of which show up in barely fictionalized fashion in the short stories and novels. \nAnd over thirteen years\, through ongoing research in special collections archives\, digital databases and around the city\, they made bombshell discoveries that are worthy of Chandler’s detective hero Philip Marlowe\, and that transform our understanding of who Raymond Chandler really was\, while illuminating personal mysteries he intended to take with him to the grave. \nIn this webinar\, you’ll take a virtual tour through Raymond Chandler’s life in Southern California\, with intimate visits to places that still carry a hint of the noir master’s cigar smoke. You’ll stroll down Olive Street\, where Chandler worked as an oil company executive and got a front row seat to the corruption and depravity that go hand in hand with wealth and power\, insights that he would weave into his writing. You’ll follow Philip Marlowe to a small room in a shabby Downtown hotel\, where someone is waiting with an icepick in their neck. And you’ll hear how we sleuthed out the existence of Chandler’s first serious piece of Los Angeles writing: a previously unknown comic operetta in the style of Gilbert & Sullivan\, a collaboration with Julian Pascal\, whose wife Cissy would become the love of his life. \nYou’ll also hear about Kim Cooper’s nonfiction novel “The Kept Girl\,” which features the young Chandler and a real-life model for Philip Marlowe on the trail of a cult of murderous angel worshippers\, and about the new Raymond Chandler map of Los Angeles\, a collaboration between Cooper and artist Paul Rogers. \nOur very special guest for the webinar is Sybil Davis\, whose mother Jean Fracasse was Raymond Chandler’s last secretary\, and who enjoyed a unique relationship with the author as that rare child who he considered a friend. \nThis webinar is an illustrated lecture packed with original research\, photographs and archival material that will bring Raymond Chandler’s story to life on your digital device. And you’ll find the look of an Esotouric webinar is a little different than your standard dry Zoom session\, with lively interactive graphics courtesy of the mmhmm app. \nSo snap the brim of your favorite fedora as we virtually visit the real places and characters who inspired timeless tales like “The Big Sleep\,” “The Lady in the Lake” and “The Little Sister\,” and get to know the fascinating man behind the larger-than-life Raymond Chandler persona. \nAfter the presentation\, Kim and Richard will answer your questions about their experiences exploring Raymond Chandler’s world\, so get ready to be a part of the show. \nCan’t join in when the webinar is happening? You’ll have access to the full replay for one week. \nSo\, tune in and discover the incredible history of Los Angeles\, with the couple whose passion for the city is infectious. \nFYI: Immediately upon registering\, you will receive a separate\, automated email containing the link to join the webinar. They also helped to bring a previously unknown tile mural\, removed from the building’s walls decades ago\, to the Pasadena Museum of History for inclusion in the 2017 exhibit “Batchelder: Tilemaker.” \nIn this webinar\, you’ll get to know the secrets and mysteries of this fascinating structure\, learn about the colorful characters who shaped it\, get close to the tile to discover some hidden details\, and to hear our hopes for the building’s future. \nLos Angeles in the 1910s was a young metropolis with a taste for spectacle\, a brand-new motion picture industry and a growing middle class hungry for excitement. Quinby and Petitfils’ cultured Chocolate Shop chain specialized in attractive dining rooms geared to the feminine shopping and after theater set—but Chocolate Shop #4 (1914) was special. \nHere the proprietors spent a small fortune commissioning architects Plummer and Feil to craft a fantastical Old World environment\, where elaborate medieval brick groin vaults framed a pre-modern Dutch village in three dimensional tile murals\, each huge scene fired in Batchelder’s Arroyo Seco backyard. A pair of life sized sculpted Dutch children blew illuminated soap bubbles\, and a wee tile windmill stood atop the soda fountain. The cool\, dark tile offered a respite from the blazing California sun\, and a fantasy environment in which to sample delicious treats with your pals. \nBut despite the success of the Chocolate Shop’s local dining rooms and a brisk souvenir trade in bon bons packed in signature decorated California redwood boxes\, the chain sputtered out in the mid 1920s. \nFuture owners couldn’t bring themselves to redecorate\, which is how this masterpiece of the Arts & Crafts style came to be home to an influential health food restaurant\, a beloved cafeteria\, and most recently a funky\, multi-vendor swap meet\, before emerging back into public consciousness as a decorative art masterpiece in an incredible moment during one of our Downtown tours. \nAnd did we mention the weird quack medical clinic on the top floor? \nThis webinar is an illustrated lecture packed with original photographs that will bring the Dutch Chocolate Shop and Ernest Batchelder’s Arroyo Seco tile studio to life on your digital device. And you’ll find the look of an Esotouric webinar is a little different than your standard dry Zoom session\, with lively interactive graphics courtesy of the mmhmm app. \nAfter the presentation\, Kim and Richard will answer your questions about the Dutch Chocolate Shop\, Batchelder tile\, Downtown Los Angeles and their passion for historic preservation\, so get ready to be a part of the show. \nCan’t join in when the webinar is happening? You’ll have access to the full replay for one week. \nSo\, tune in and discover the incredible history of Los Angeles\, with the couple whose passion for the city is infectious.
